The Patient Season 2: Is there going to be a sequel?

In fact, “The Patient” is planned as a miniseries. Is there still hope for Season 2 of The Patient?

If you were as surprised as lead actor Steve Carell by the finale of “The Patient,” you’re not alone (via USA Today). The series finale leaves us with a lot of questions that we will almost certainly never receive solutions to. That’s because, according to “The Americans” writers Joel Fields and Joseph Weisberg, “The Patient” has officially concluded after 10 episodes. Is it possible that they will reconsider their decision?

The Patient Season 2: What about a sequel?

Will Shoshana (Renata Friedman) and Ezra (Andrew Leeds) be able to deal with their father’s (Steve Carell) death? Will Sam (Domhnall Gleeson) ever face justice? And how will Candace (Linda Emond) handle her son’s self-inflicted fate? If you’re wondering what happens next for the surviving people from “The Patient,” you’ll have to rely on your own imagination, just like Dr. Strauss did in the series. Despite the series’ success, the riveting ten-episode drama was always intended to be a miniseries, and the showrunners have no plans to change that, as Fields stated in an interview with USA Today:

“We’re done with it. This is ‘The Patient,’ and we hope you enjoyed it. But we’re not going to stop doing other shows, of course. We just have to figure out what we’re going to tackle next.”

The season finale is also a success for lead actor Domhnall Gleeson (via Decider):

“It’s the only way the series can end. It’s perfect. […] It says so much about Steve [Carell’s] character and what it means to be alive. I thought it was really emotional and honest and yet surprising. They just did a great job of keeping the balls in the air.”

The Patient Ending Explained: Here’s what the last minutes  mean

Alan Strauss likes his life of freedom in the company of his family, but this proves to be an illusion. Several times prior, the therapist sought refuge in his imagination, misleading both himself and the audience. In actuality, Sam murders Dr. Strauss when he fails to escape the bunker.

We next witness Sam writing to his victim’s children, Shoshana and Ezra, alerting them of their father’s murder and explaining where the corpse might be discovered. The letter demonstrates that Dr. Strauss is aware of his faults in the past. But it is not only Shoshana and Ezra who are affected by their father’s death; Sam is also troubled by what he did.

In one scenario, Sam characterizes himself as being out of treatment. He swears not to harm anybody else. But the fictitious Dr. Strauss makes it apparent that he will not succeed. To uphold his pledge, Sam takes a decision: he puts on the anklet himself and delivers the key to his mother.

Finally, Ezra seeks a therapist to work through his issues with his father. He admits that he is concerned about his family, but he doesn’t know where to begin. A blank screen stops the treatment session before we understand what is upsetting him. As a result, we will never know what Ezra has to say.

Nonetheless, the conclusion of the thriller series is far more rewarding than in these instances.

Gleeson exposes what Sam could face next

Despite the fact that it is intended to remain a miniseries, Gleeson speculated with Decider regarding the fate of his character Sam:

“I think Strauss has helped him have an incredible breakthrough. But without the real Strauss, the therapy can’t go on. […] Strauss has gone to another therapist in his mind – and I think Sam would do the same and imagine Strauss. But it would be his own version of Strauss, because Sam doesn’t have his expertise. Gradually, he would convince himself that he was cured. I don’t know if it would hold. I don’t know if the illusion would take over. But I think he learned a lot in those moments. I just wonder how capable he would be of sticking with it without real therapy.”

Perhaps this is a little consolation for lovers of the show. Those who are still depressed at the series’ untimely finale may find some solace in “The Americans.” The series created by the makers of “The Patient” may be found on Disney+.
